High Stakes Match

An argument that persists even to this day, which black powder rifle is more accurate, the muzzle loading target rifle or the breech loading target rifle? In the heyday of black powder target shooting, prior to 1900, there were any number of private rifle matches for sometimes surprisingly high stakes, to settle that question. This scene depicts just such a shoot-off. The match has been shot, resulting in a heated discussion of the scoring due to the handicap granted to the shooter of the breech loading rifle.

In those days, the muzzle loading target rifles still reigned supreme when it came to precision shooting from a bench rest. It was not unusual for a muzzle loading rifle shooter to give a handicap of a few points to the breech loader, knowing he had a definite edge in pure accuracy, although sometimes, the scores fired by the breech loader were quite close to the muzzle loader.
